FELLOWS ONLY : Navigating the Hospitalized Patient & Understanding Fluid Therapy in Small Animal Practice (Virtual) Monday, April 20, 2026 | 7:00 PM ET
Walter Brown, RVTg VTS (ECC) discussed fluid therapy fundamentals and critical care nursing strategies, emphasizing individualized patient management, clinical decision-making, and improved outcomes across emergency settings practice. Participants learned how to think, not just what to do - applying fluid principles, nursing care strategies critical thinking to improve outcomes in the real-world emergency and critical care patients.

FELLOWS ONLY: Pain - Understanding and Advocating - A Veterinary Technician/Nurse's Perspective (Virtual) Thursday, March 12, 2026 | 7:00 PM ET
Donna Sisak, CVT, LVT, VTS (Anesthesia/Analgesia) discussed the importance of an integrative team approach in pain management for the patient in the post-op period. This program reminded attendees that as a veterinary technician/nurse, you are a TRUE patient advocate – medical, physical and emotional support - for the welfare of each patient. Donna discussed the importance of understanding “the basics” of the physiology of pain, pain terminology and different types of pain with a conception that recognition and treatment of pain is a complex task and how the multimodal approach – is advised in achieving a safe, comfortable recovery. She addressed that effective analgesia begins with a calm/less anxious patient and pre-emptive analgesia, and offer recommendations for improving pain management - staying abreast and informed of new analgesic modalities- and overcoming obstacles interfering with the patient’s well-being encouraging a comfortable, safe recovery.
