Mission

The mission of the AVTSE is to provide resources that elevate the skills, knowledge and professionalism of veterinary technicians in the education profession by igniting and maintaining passion throughout their educational career. 

Credentialing Exam Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to sit for the credentialing exam, applicants must demonstrate a commitment to both education and technical proficiency in veterinary technology. The following criteria outline the necessary qualifications:

General Requirements:

  • Minimum Points Required: Applicants must accrue at least 20 points from the below categories related to education and technical skills.
  • Time Frame: Please note points in categories related to Program Development, Publications, and/or Presentations
  • Graduate of an AVMA approved Veterinary Technician program and/or credentialed to practice as a Veterinary Technician in some State or Province of the United States, Canada, or other country., Three years (a minimum of 5,000 hrs) work experience or its equivalent as an educator. All experience must be completed within five years immediately prior to the application.

Veterinary Technician Education: (Maximum of 10 points from these categories)

  • Masters or Doctorate in Education (10 points)
  • Bachelors Degree in Education (5 points)
  • Completion of College level credit course in Education (1 point)

Post-Graduate Work in the Field of Education: (All points claimed in this section are based on activity within five years of the application date.)

  • Completion of a college-level course in education (5 points)
  • Attending a 45-90 minute seminar within the last five years related to learning or education (3 points)
  • Attending a 45-90 minute workshop within the last five years on technical topics related to veterinary technology (2 points)

Program Development, Publications, and/or Presentations: (You must claim a minimum of 20 points, in a minimum of 4 sections overall. Please pay attention to each scoring element; some have a horizon of five (5) years for activities you are claiming credit.)

  • Development of a 4-year Bachelor's level AVMA accredited Veterinary Technician Program? (10 points)
  • Development of a NAVTA Approved Veterinary Assistant Program? (5 points)
  • Development of a non-NAVTA Approved Veterinary Assistant Program? (3 points)
  • Development of an Accredited / Approved course in Veterinary Technician / Assistant Education? (2 points)
  • Development of a RACE Approved Industry / Practice Educational Program? (8 points)
  • Development of a non-RACE Approved Industry Educational Program? (0.5 pt per CE credit or contact hour)
  • Development of a RACE Approved Course / Webinar? (0.5 pt per CE credit or contact hour)
  • Primary author of a textbook used for education of Veterinary Health Care team members? (10 points)
  • Chapter contributor or co-author of a textbook used for education of Veterinary team members?
  • Primary author of a textbook about learning or education? (10 points)
  • Chapter contributor or co-author of a textbook about learning or education? (5 points)

Below must have been completed within four (4) years prior to application.

  • Author of a peer-reviewed journal article on learning or education? (3 points)
  • Author of a peer-reviewed journal article on skills related to the practice of Veterinary Technology? (3 points)
  • Presenting an approved (jurisdictional, RACE, or equivalent) seminar of 45-90 minutes related to learning or education? (3 points)
  • Presenting an approved (jurisdictional, RACE, or equivalent) seminar of 45-90 minutes on topics related to the practice of Veterinary Technology? (3 points)
  • Attending a seminar of 45-90 minutes related to learning or education? (1 point)
